Our central listing of cemeteries is at: http://ncbible.org/nwh/OrCemeteries.html THE JACKSON CEMETERY ADDRESS: Delameter Road, Castle Rook, WA 98611 LEGAL DESCRIPTION: NE¼-NW¼,Section 16, T9N-R2W WM The Jackson Cemetery is located about ½ mile south of the Delameter Road and perhaps ¼ mile east of what was once known as the Military Road that connected the pioneer town of Monticello and Olympia. It occupies a bit of land in the south-east corner of the Henry Jackson Government Donation Land Claim and also borders the west property line of the Elisha Jackson G.D.L.C. Since it was the first cemetery in this area it became the final resting place of many of the Jackson family, their neighbors, and some travelers, from 1855 through the 1940s. It was never a public burial place and never had a public road into it. It is estimated that there are at least 80 graves on the knoll accessible only by foot or 4—wheel drive vehicles. The cemetery is now under the management of Cemetery District #1 and was last cleaned up and treated with herbicides in 1985. William Whittle established the second cemetery in this vicinity in 1882. For many years following the establishment of the Jackson Cemetery the only markers for the graves were head and foot boards. An early day brush fire destroyed many markers in the south east corner. lt was then impossible te locate or identify the graves in this relatively large area. There were no more burials there. At this late date it is not possible to guess who are buried there. Some of these people may have been strangers or migrants. Most of the following information was complied by Linda Harriss and LaVada Gustin using data from the local mortuary, the cemetery, and the Cowlitt County Advocate in 1982. Some additional information and updating was added by Izetta R. Clegg and Leland Jackson in January 1987. The following information is a part of a much larger research project of the LOWER COLUMBIA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY.
